How the Couch Won
A WFH timeline, a small descent into comfort
It is amazing how quickly we can adapt.
I was working from home almost exclusively until near the end of last year. Then I started coming into the office a couple days a week in preparation for RTO at the end of February. I adjusted. I got used to the commute, the desk, the rhythm. I also got very adjusted to being seen again.
This week, we’re back to WFH while we move to new office space.
I adjusted again. Immediately.
Monday was a time‑change nightmare, but I managed to be presentable. I even had to leave the house, so things felt fairly normal.
Then came Tuesday, and the slide began.
I had a meeting that required being on camera, so I rallied and became presentable by about 2PM. That felt like a win.
Wednesday arrived. I had an on‑camera 1:1, but I was puppy trapped and frankly unmotivated to leave the couch, so I stayed put. The couch won.
By Thursday, I turned off Teams altogether. I did manage to put on a hoodie with pajama bottoms, but even that required more effort than interested me.
During the week, the team started talking about a previous coworker who practiced WFB. Work From Bed. Apparently, there was a whole setup.
I have a line.
My line is WFC. Work From Couch.
It’s a recliner couch. I usually have one cat at my feet and a puppy at my side. Sometimes an extra cat or two shows up. I am comfy.
WFB feels like one step too far.
Or is it?
